Meet your Hosts

Hillary and Scott met in the spring of 2019. They had both swiped right and met through the Tinder app. The first time they met at the local Cubby’s, the spark between them was instant. They had planned on just getting a bite to eat but ended up in the restaurant for hours talking. They instantly connected through their love of music and sobriety journeys.

One of Scott’s favorite bands was playing a concert just a few days later and invited Hillary to come. During the concert they connected even deeper and had amazing conversations all night. When they got back to Hillary’s car at the end of the night, Scott describes the hug she gave him as, “sending butterflies through [his] body” before she kissed him. Scott knew he had found his person.

They dated for about a year before deciding to get engaged and have now been married since September of 2021. Together they have been able to grow as a couple and enjoy individually supporting each other through all of the wins and trials of life.

This brings us to 2025 when Hillary and Scott embarked on a journey to share what they have learned, and from those who they continually learn from through their podcast, Surviving Life’s Pickles.

Hillary & Scott Martin

  • My name is Scott Martin, I am a son, a father, a husband, a friend and most of all I am a Professional Human.

Throughout my life I have experienced a lot of what most people would consider horrible, awful or even traumatic experiences but I look at each of them as a lesson that has taught me a great deal and modeled me into the person I am today. I have been an addict since the age of 17 bouncing from one addiction or substance to the next along with being an alcoholic for 15 yrs. I have been through marriage, divorce, loss of a child, serious and life threating medical issues, suicide attempts, bankruptcy, job loss, weight loss journey of going from 340lbs size 46 waist to 210 lbs size 34 waist and many other experiences in between. Over the course of my life, I have also sought out help through religion, AA, support groups, traditional therapy, ketamine assisted therapy and self-guided journeys through meditation and finding my place amongst nature.

Today I can say that I am happily married, have 5 beautiful and amazing kids, sober and enjoying life to the fullest. I love all types of physical fitness now but truly enjoy mountain biking, hiking, paddleboarding and wrestling with our dogs and boys. I spend as much of my time as I can outside experiencing the beautiful landscape we have here in Utah. Our family attends as many concerts as we can a year and makes at least 1 trip to Red Rocks in Colorado yearly to enjoy the happiest place on earth. (in our opinion)

I am excited to share my experiences along with all the experiences of our guests and people we have met along this journey we call life with all of you, my new friends. I hope that through our trials, pain and wins we can help you through all the sweet and sour pickles you are going through in your life today. Let’s navigate this journey together!

  • I am Hillary Martin, I was born, raised and have lived in the beautiful state of Utah my whole life. I am a wife and stepmom of 3 adult girls, two rambunctious boys and a dog mom of two. We have a busy and chaotic home, but I love every minute of it.

After many years of struggling with addiction I am proud to say I am a grateful recovering addict of ten years. Throughout my recovery journey I was able to learn the importance of family, service, authenticity, and self-love. I worked as a waitress for 15 years and have now worked HR in the recovery field for the past eight and a half years. I enjoy many hobbies such as, painting, crafting, making jewelry, and Paddleboarding. I enjoy camping and off-roading with my family, attending as many concerts as we can afford and traveling to new places. I also enjoy reading a good book and of course listening to my favorite music and podcasts. I look forward to this new journey to connect with others, learning and sharing experiences, strengths and struggles and most of all sharing hope and happiness.
